Kevin Ryan

The fourth CH President, Kevin Ryan has devoted his career to child welfare issues. A member of both the NY and NJ Bars, with a Masters of Law from NYU and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown, Kevin worked for CH New Jersey from 1997-2002 and was Counsel to the Garden State Coalition for Youth and Family Concerns, Inc. In 2003 Governor McGreevey tapped him to serve as NJ’s first State Child Advocate to monitor and enhance accountability within government agencies that serve children by investigating systemic deficiencies and championing recommendations for improvement. In 2006, under Governor Corzine, Kevin was appointed NJ Commissioner of Human Services and six months later became that state’s first Commissioner of Children and Families, where he oversaw a successful comprehensive reform of the child welfare system. In March 2008 Kevin, serving as COO to the United Nations Special Envoy, launched the first UN office targeting the eradication of deaths from malaria which kills more than one million African children annually. In July of that year, he was also asked to oversee a settlement agreement in Michigan seeking wide-ranging improvements to that state’s child welfare system. In February 2009 Kevin returned to Covenant House as its first lay president. With his wife Clare and six children, Kevin resides in Fair Haven, NJ.
