C
ovenant House Alaska is a non-profit 501(C) 3 social service organization.
We have been “a lifeline to the streets” for homeless and runaway youth in
Anchorage since 1988. Beyond being a crisis shelter, CHA offers walk-in and
outreach resources for youth including options for long-term residential assistance.
The Crisis Center, located at 609 F Street in downtown Anchorage, is a
40-bed facility that provides shelter, food, clothing, counseling and
medical attention to young people ages 13 through 20. The Crisis Center,
open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is a safe place for young people
who need a place to stay.
There are no fees for our services. Services are provided to youth without
regard to ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, or physical challenges.

The cornerstone of Covenant House services is our “Open Intake” policy.
Our door is never closed. Twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year, kids come to our
Crisis Center when they have nowhere else to go. We never tell them we have no room. We never
tell them to come back later. We give them hot food, a shower, clean clothes and a warm bed.
If they need immediate medical attention they get that too.
We don't stop with shelter. Our case managers move quickly, working with
the kids to determine the next step for them with a priority to try to
reunite them with parents or relatives. When that's not possible, and
often it isn't, we help them form a plan based on their individual needs.

| Without proper education, it is nearly impossible for youth to
obtain gainful employment. Covenant House Alaska staff, in partnership with Anchorage
School District Title One teachers, provide educational guidance, structure and support
to school age youth in a positive learning environment. Through services such as
after-school tutoring, remedial education groups, and General Equivalency Diploma
preparation classes, youth receive the essential tools they need to achieve academic
success. |
| |
| |
| Covenant House Alaska’s Job Development Program assists youth
in finding a job, maintaining employment, and enhancing employability. Through an
extensive and comprehensive training period, youth gain the skills and confidence
needed to succeed in the workforce. Vocational assessments, training and referrals
are provided to youth who enter the program. |
| |
| |
| The goal of our activities program is to get kids involved in educational
and recreational activities, including exercise programs. Exercise has many physical,
mental and emotional benefits. Activities such as movies, crafts and the performing arts
give our kids a much-needed respite from the problems and challenges that have brought
them to Covenant House. |

Young people often don’t have much of a voice of their own.
Part of our mission at Covenant House Alaska is to speak for them and help them
speak out for themselves, to make sure the decision makers at all levels of
government count kids in. We are committed to raising the awareness of legislators
and the public at large to the problems and suffering that young people face here in Alaska.
We advocate on behalf of homeless, runaway and at-risk youth at the local,
state and federal level, as well as offer referral for direct client services
and various youth development programs.

| Because life on the streets makes our kids highly susceptible to a variety
of illnesses and injuries, Crisis Center provides a wide range of health services. Our nurse
practitioner is on call 24 hours a day. Youth may also receive free walk-in medical services
from 1 pm to 5 pm Monday through Friday at our Youth Resource Center. |
| |
| |
| |
| With the understanding that care of the psychological and physical
needs of our kids must be complemented by spiritual care, pastoral staff and volunteers
provide an opportunity for spiritual guidance, prayer, and a discussion of values.
We believe this helps youth gain necessary self-esteem and confidence as they face
their many challenges. |
