Dealing with conflicts

The number one reason that teens leave home is because of conflicts with parents that result from lack of communication. There are many reasons that families don’t communicate- different schedules, limited time together, hard feelings- yet it is the most important thing families need to do. Here are some techniques to improve communication within your family- and with others:
  1. Try to understand first, and then be understood.
  2. Never name call or let a conversation become personal. Stick to the facts.
  3. Never assume what the other person is thinking. Ask them.
  4. Think in terms of compromising, not winning.
  5. Say specifically how you feel but avoid blaming or accusing.
  6. Don’t fight old battles. Stick to the present situation.
  7. Never raise your voice. When emotions run high, this can be the toughest, yet most important technique.
  8. Talk a little bit every day. As you slowly build rapport, it becomes easier to talk.
  9. Don’t beat around the bush. Be direct, honest, and respectful.
  10. Write a letter. Sometimes we need to take the time to put our feelings in words.

My child has runaway what do I do?

Most runaways don’t go very far and can usually be found if you take the following steps:

Call the Anchorage Police Department at 786-8500.

Call their friends. Many kids stay with friends when they leave home. Even if the friend says they haven’t seen them ask them to pass on message that you care about them and just want to make sure that they are safe.

Contact our Crisis Center at 272-1255. Most youth in Anchorage have heard about Covenant House and know that they can come to us if they need a safe place to stay.

Call their school counselor to find out if they are still in school and any other information they might have.

Go to the mall and other places where kids usually hang out. Distribute a flyer with their picture and contact information.
