Passage House is located in a residential
neighborhood that offers easy access to schools, bus routes, hospitals and recreational
facilities. Passage House is designed to provide young mothers with the opportunity to
learn the tools necessary to change their lives. Young mothers and their babies may stay
at Passage House for up to 18 months.
Passage House seeks to challenge parenting and pregnant teens to become productive,
successful, independent adults who are able to provide a stable environment for their
children.

| |
|
Applicants must be parenting or pregnant young women from 16 to 20 years old,
without healthy housing alternatives and in need of comprehensive life skills.
They must also be willing and able to reside with others in a supportive community
environment. We accept referrals from self, or other community programs. Minors must
have a placement agreement signed by their legal guardian. In addition to completing
an application, a comprehensive autobiography must also be submitted by the applicant.

| Passage House is designed to mirror the "real world" as much as
possible. Many young women come to us without even the most basic skills required
for independent living and parenting. Through workshops and individual coaching,
we seek to assist these young women in developing skills such as healthy parenting,
money management, priority setting, housing acquisition and social-skills development.

Services offered at Passage House:
- Job readiness skills and employment support
- Case Management to support independent living goals
- Independent living skills workshops
- Coordination and referral to community providers
- Parenting education
- 24-hour support staff
- An extensive aftercare program to ensure stability and
continuance of objectives set while at Passage House.

All of the young mothers who participate in Passage House are eligible for Aftercare
Services. Aftercare assists mother and child in the task of stabilizing their lives
once they’ve moved into their new home. The aftercare program provides follow up and
contact with them on an ongoing basis. |

The participation of the volunteer mentor is another key feature of the Passage House
program. The mentor’s role is critical in the development of our young girls, who in the
past may have lacked effective adult influences in their lives. Through a caring, candid
relationship, mentors can contribute significantly to the personal and social growth of
the young mothers and their babies.
Mentors are volunteers from the community assigned to each resident to guide her
through the learning process. Perhaps, for the first time in their young lives,
they have a caring, interested adult committed to their success.
Motherhood is an awesome challenge, even for adults. For young women who are little
more than children themselves, it is a frightening and for most an overwhelming
responsibility. The young mothers who enter our Passage House Program often find
themselves on the streets, with no job, no money, and nowhere to turn.
Our staff and volunteers are role models for these mothers, teaching them how to care
for their children. We provide them a safe place to live where they can begin to plan
a life for themselves and their children. Our goal is to provide these young mothers
with the tools and support necessary to allow them to become self-sufficient and
therefore resist the temptation of welfare.
