Young people
who come to Covenant House Alaska are in desperate need of a supportive escape from the high risk and
harsh elements they face in our community. Our Youth Resource Center promotes healthy behavior among
young people and their families by assisting them in coping with the pressures of adolescence so that
they can grow into adulthood and achieve independence. Services include counseling, referrals, educational
assistance, vocational assistance, life skills workshops, relationship groups, food, and transportation
assistance.
Youth Resource Center staff collaborate with area schools, recreation centers, and
other social service providers to alert youth of our services and offer them an alternative
to hanging out on the streets. |

Our mission to serve the suffering children of the street,
begins on the street. The process for change for many of our kids begins with
a contact by a member of our Outreach Staff. The initial contact can be as
simple as providing a coat or sack meal. But the message is clear: you do have
choices, there are people who care, and if you are willing, we will help you.
The Covenant House Alaska Street Outreach Program is the bridge between life on
the streets and a new life filled with the promise of opportunity to be independent.
However, it is usually not an easy process. It can take weeks of working with kids to
win over their trust. But, eventually we are rewarded by someone who asks if she/he can
return with us to the Crisis Center.

To respond to the outcry of kids in crisis, Covenant House established
our national hotline, NINELINE, a 24-hour toll free hotline, which provides crisis
intervention, referrals and information services to homeless, runaway and other troubled
youth and their families throughout the United States. Staffed with trained counselors,
NINELINE connects troubled teens to local assistance utilizing a database of over 28,000
agencies.
NINELINE can connect with one of our Outreach teams, sending staff to the aid of a young
person in dire need of assistance.
NINELINE is our way of helping all of America’s lost children by providing help wherever
and whenever it’s needed.
