Community Services Center
While many youth enter Covenant House Alaska’s (CHA) Crisis Center, some youth are more comfortable participating in a less structured program, such as our Community Services Center. At the Community Services Center, day services are offered from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Youth (both residents and non-residents) can receive a variety of services, which are all geared towards getting them on their feet. Services, which are offered at no cost, include:

  • Case Management. All youth who come to the Community Services Center are assigned a case manager, who they can develop a trusting relationship with.
  • Basic Needs. We provide youth with basics, such as bus tokens, food, clothing, hygiene and first aid, a place to take a shower, a place to store belongings, and a place to collect mail and messages. This allows youth to concentrate on their education and employment needs without worrying about where they are going to sleep. It also helps youth avoid unsafe and illegal activities to secure their basic needs.
  • Employment and Educational Assistance. We assist youth with completing their education or obtaining their GED. They can also participate in the Helping in Readiness 4 Employment (4 Hire) curriculum, which provides workshops to help youth develop job readiness skills.
  • Life Skills. Youth have the opportunity to attend workshops on a variety of topics such as budgeting, cooking, how to rent an apartment, taxes, conflict resolution and more. Youth may also attend Legal Street, a monthly clinic addressing a variety of legal topics.
  • Foster Care Transitioning. Through a partnership with the Office of Children’s Services, we work with youth who are transitioning out of the foster care system. Case managers educate these youth on available services, such as funding for education, vocational training, rental assistance and household goods.
  • Street Outreach. Through our street outreach efforts, we reach homeless youth where they are – on the street.

Youth at the Community Services Center also have access to other CHA programs, such as the Crisis Center and Transitional Living Program, as well as CHA services, such as Employment/Education Assistance, Health Services, the Youth Enrichment Program, Pastoral Ministry, and Housing Services.
