Some kids leave the streets and go into
our shelter; others still fearful of change need support
in a different way. That is why we opened a resource
center. In the center we are committed to helping kids
by providing both support to leave the streets and support
to remain in a safe environment, depending on their situation.
Our services include, but are not limited to, family
mediation, counseling referrals, job search assistance
and employment referrals, a free medical clinic, educational
assistance, life skills workshops, emergency food, assistance
to young parents and recreational activities as positive
alternatives to risky behavior.

Counseling
Services
A variety of counseling services are available at the CSC for no charge.
Our staff work hard to provide kids with the services they need to stay
safe. Counselors lead weekly groups on issues such as anger, drug and
alcohol issues, depression, relationship building, and crisis management.
A family advocate is also on site to provide mediation between kids and
parents.
Educational
Programs
Through the Child in Transition/Homeless program, the Anchorage School
District provides teachers and tutors on site at the Community
Service Center helping kids get back into school.
Legal
Street
On the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. the Advocacy department,
in cooperation with Alaska Legal Services, presents Legal Street, an
informational legal clinic for youth at the Community
Service Center. (750
West 5th Avenue) on the corner of 5th Avenue and H Street.
This
clinic is open to all youth in the Anchorage community.
Alaska Legal Services addresses legal questions raised
by youth on civil law topics such as landlord-tenant
law, automobile sales, truth in lending, domestic relation,
child support enforcement, and child custody. Youth with
questions or legal entanglements are encouraged to attend.

A Vital Component:
Anchorage’s Business Community
The Anchorage business community is a vital component of this program.
We are eager to establish relationships with members of the Anchorage
business community for two reasons. First, our youth gain solid, hands-on
experience by working with and learning from experts in a variety of
fields. Second, local businesses can benefit from young, skilled adults
seeking employment.
"I learned
about resume-writing, mock interviews, stress management
in the workplace and adequate procedures like a firm
handshake and eye contac. They helped me gain
a lot of things that I never thought were possible
for me, such as self-esteem and social skills.”

I went to the Job Development Program at Covenant
House, it really helped me to be able to ask questions
and have extra personal attention.”

Comprehensive
Training Program
GED Pre-Testing — Job
Development staff administer pre-testing for the five
required areas of the General Education Development exam:
Language Arts, Writing, Reading, Social Studies, Science
and Mathematics. Youth have several opportunities to
take these tests and to work with staff to improve their
skills and test scores. The success of our GED pre-testing
and preparation is made possible in part through a generous
donation made by the Fred Meyer Foundation for new GED
study guides and preparation materials.
Education and Work-Skills Assessment — We
meet with kids and assess their academic and professional
strengths and weaknesses. Our job development specialists
work with the youth to identify specific areas that need
improvement, such as academic subjects, computer literacy
or self-management in the workplace. Youth work to develop
and implement strategies for improvement.
“The
Job Development Program helped me to study and go through
completing tests to earn my GED.”

Career-Interest Surveys — We
encourage kids to take the Alaska Career Interest Systems
survey, a tool that evaluates individual strengths
and career preferences. This test is a powerful tool
to help youth set immediate and long-term career goals.
Job-Search
Assistance — Covenant House youth
participate in pre-employment workshops that highlight
topics, including job-hunting strategies, application
guidelines, interviewing skills, professional attire,
self-management techniques and conflict resolution.
