There are
many ways for groups to support the youth we serve in our programs
through a community service project. We’ve listed several
below.
Seasonal
Celebrations
People
often want to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with our
kids and share in the joy and spirit of giving during these
special times. There are many other opportunities to share
the warmth and fun of holiday celebrations with our kids throughout
the year: Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day,
Easter, the Fourth of July or Halloween. Sponsor a theme party
and work with staff to plan a special event for our kids.
Bring along the food, decorations and anything else that will
make the event a special time.
(Reminder: Because of
the transitional population, it is impossible to guarantee
exact numbers of youth participating at any one time.)

Kids
Helping Kids
Many youth in the community
are interested in volunteering their time to lend support
to the youth at Covenant House Alaska. While it is not possible
for youth outside of Covenant House Alaska to interact with
our kids directly, there are numerous ways that youth can
help: Organizing collection drives for clothes, school supplies,
books, and Christmas gifts. Participating in a service project
such as yard work, clearing ice in the winter, cleaning the
vans or litter clean-up at one of our sites. We are happy
to have a staff member give a presentation on our programs
and share some of the stories of our kids with a youth group
as part of this process.

Soap,
Sponge & Bucket Brigade
We
have several vans at Covenant House Alaska that we use to
transport our residents to activities and to reach out to
youth as we travel the streets of Anchorage looking for kids
who need help. As you can imagine, these vans need constant
care and cleaning! You can help. We’ll provide the soap,
sponges, vacuum and radio. You bring the energy and elbow
grease to make our vans fresh and clean.

It's the Little Things That Count
Often our kids arrive at the shelter with nothing but the clothes
on their backs. They lack basic clothing items that we take
for granted such as socks and underwear. In a household of
twenty to forty teens, you can imagine the volume required
to keep our kids adequately clothed. They always need more
socks and underwear! To help, you can sponsor a collection
drive for new socks and underwear at your church, workplace,
or neighborhood organization.
For our kids, it truly is the little things that count.

Wardrobes
That Work
Clean
out your closets and help us fill ours! Coordinate a group
at work or church to collect professional and business-casual
attire for our job-seeking teenagers. Many of our kids don’t
have the necessary clothes for a job interview or appropriate
work attire. We rely on community donations to provide them
with suitable apparel for the workplace.
Please
remember that most of our kids are between the ages of 16
and 20. LARGER SIZES ARE ESPECIALLY IN DEMAND.
