Intake:
You can be the first person to greet a young person seeking services
at Covenant House Alaska! Volunteers answer phone calls, provide
walk-in services such as sack lunches and hygiene kits, and provide
information on services when people walk in.
Food
Service : We need volunteers to serve lunch and dinner
to our youth on the weekends. Food is prepared but would
need to be warmed up, put out and served. Lunch volunteers
needed 10 am to 1 pm & dinner volunteers needed 4:30 pm to
6:00 pm. Food handling license preferred.
Pastoral
Ministry: Volunteers work with staff to provide positive,
spiritual activities for youth. Activities include facilitating
small groups, assisting in planning/performing skits, leading
games, and most importantly, building relationships with youth.
Crisis
Center: Volunteers assist staff in supervising and interacting
with youth staying in our shelter. Responsibilities include supervising
residents, participating in educational and life skills groups,
listening and being a role model.
Outreach: Our Outreach staff
and volunteers travel the streets of Anchorage on foot, riding
bikes and driving the Covenant
House Alaska outreach vans providing food, clothing, referrals
and a personal connection to homeless youth living on the
streets. Our outreach staff and volunteers provide a doorway
to a safe place and program services for the most vulnerable
youth who don’t believe anyone cares.
Community
Services: Volunteers, along with staff and current residents
of the program, travel to local schools and community centers
to provide prevention workshops and life skills training to “at
risk” youth.
Clerical:
Volunteer opportunities for clerical work are abundant. They include
covering the telephones, assisting with general mail outs, and
compiling data.
Life
Skills: Experienced individuals are needed to present
workshops on life skills such as budgeting, money management,
self-esteem, parenting, anger management, etc. Volunteers can
also help facilitate discussion groups on such topics as abstinence
and respect.
Mentoring:
We try to match each of our transitional living program residents
with an adult mentor. Our transitional living programs serve males
and females between the ages of 18 and 20. Volunteers provide
guidance and act as positive role models for many of our residents.
