Rights of Passage
Rights of Passage (ROP) is one of Covenant House Alaska’s (CHA) transitional living programs. It is designed to help homeless youth, ages 18 to 20, address the issues and responsibilities of adulthood, while receiving support and guidance from our staff and volunteer mentors in a residential setting. After graduating from the program, our hope is that youth will be prepared to lead successful, independent lives.

While at ROP, youth have access to services including:

  • Skill and education assessments
  • Case management
  • Employment and educational assistance
  • Individual plan and goal-setting
  • Vocational assistance on topics including interviewing, proper dress, job retention, and employer/employee interactions
  • Job readiness skills and employment support
  • Independent living skills workshops on topics like paying rent, maintaining a checking account, and setting short/long-term goals
  • Financial development and budget management
  • Coordination and referral to community providers
  • 24-hour support staff
  • After-care to ensure stability and continued pursuit of goals

Upon graduation from ROP, youth receive assistance with locating and securing housing, as well as continued support as they transition to independent living. Youth are also eligible for after-care services, which assist them in stabilizing their lives once they’ve moved into their new homes.

For more information, contact Gena Graves, Transitional Living Program Coordinator, at (907) 339-4420 or e-mail Gena.

Being in McLaughlin, I didn’t experience things that everyone else my age did, like working with money, handling a job, or even driving a car. When I got to Covenant House, I did this in a somewhat controlled atmosphere. If I fell, I had somewhere to fall. I had someone to catch me.”
